I asked: could a garment have a memory?
There is something contradictory about the way we dress. We value clothes that have lived with us through time, because they carry memories. Yet, in this “new, new, new society”, we replace them.At the same time, we are drawn to the aesthetic of wear. Fake holes. We try to mirror a life that the garments have not actually lived. I notice myself longing for things that actually carry traces of time. My grandmother's only dress that her mother washed every evening so it could be worn again the next morning. A repaired hole. The soft creases in a garment worn over and over again.“Oud Nieuws” is a collection about time in clothing. It is about creating the conditions for change, and allowing the garment to hold different moments at once. The collection exists in pairs. A before and an after, constantly questioning and answering each other. One look holds potential, still fragile, deciding what it wants to be. The other shows a version of what that potential could have become. It stretches, it remembers pockets, it quietly collects traces of the lives it is a part of.Through exaggeration and playfulness, I want to make time visible in a garment, and in doing so, shift the perception of value. Not at the moment of purchase. But in everything that comes after. The clothes are waiting for someone to wear them long enough for something to happen.
